Presentations will update URISA-OC members: What are organizations working on? What are they planning? What problems are being identified? What problems are being solved?
Land Information Ontario has been building partnerships with municipalities, conservation authorities and other organizations to acquire digital ortho-photography. Over the last decade these projects have acquired more than 125,000 km of imagery products valued at more than $13 M. The presentation will provide an overview of the recently approved Ontario Public Service Imagery Strategy.
The ability to generate a high quality digital elevation model (DEM) has long eluded communities with limited budgets and resources. The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) is currently using data fusion to blend best available elevation data into one seamless DEM for Northumberland County. How to effectively use new technologies to increase return on investment for existing data holdings will be discussed.
With over 1600 users in the Ontario provincial government and with about 21,000 information requests monthly, the Ontario GeoPortal (www.ontariogeoportal.com) is a cloud-based software and infrastructure solution supporting information access, decision-making, and government services. Ontario GeoPortal is a great example of how geography can support virtually any government program because almost all programs have lots of data and documents with a geographic reference like an address, district, or place. Integrating and accessing this program information through geography not only saves time and money, it supports clients’ ability to work smarter and improve their delivery of services. Ontario GeoPortal was recently awarded the GTEC Distinction Award for “Transforming the Business of Government” at the national ceremony in Ottawa; and, received the “Best Public Sector GIS” award from URISA-OC last spring. The presenters will provide examples of how two very different government programs – Aboriginal consultation and facility management – are transformed through this cloud-computing service which is now available to all municipal, provincial and federal governments through Infrastructure Ontario.
The presentation will provide an overview of current project activities to modernize Ontario’s corporate GIS infrastructure, services, tools and data. It will also provide a brief overview of a recently created governance structure to manage GIS in the Ontario Public Service.
