Each year, URISA recognizes an outstanding Chapter that has sponsored particularly effective activities or has otherwise excelled in serving its membership.

This is the third yeard URISA-OC has won Chapter of the year (also won chapter of the year in 2003, and 1996).

GIS Leadership Award

May 3, 2011

URISA-Ontario Chapter has only conferred this special award a few times in its history. This award is intended to recognize individuals and/or organizations that demonstrate an exceptional level of excellence in the fields of GIS and geospatial technology, and to recognize persons who have made exceptional contributions to the field of GIS over an extended period of time.
The recipient of the award this year has been:
- an advocate of GIS and enterprise data standards for more than 20 years at the municipal and provincial levels,
- an exemplary sponsor of URISA & URISA-Ontario Chapter as well as
- a strong supporter/participant in a number of affiliate associations (Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, Canadian Institute of Planners and the Association of Landscape Architects to name a few).
- In recent years, a strong contributor on the NAP working group (the North America Profile) (Canada)and its extensive work focused on metadata standards, and
- a tireless promoter of the Ontario Road Network as part of his role at Land Information Ontario.
- a prolific writer/researcher/presenter on GIS/ Geomatics/ data standard topics.
- Has amassed a significant library of published works,
- Embraced learning as a lifelong pursuit recently finding a new communications vehicle through social media with his work on crowd sourcing and blogging.
 
From his early GIS days in Scarborough to his advocacy work at Land Information Ontario, our recipient this year truly reflects the essence of the GIS Leadership award.

There are three additional awards that recognize members for their contributions to the URISA association and the community at large. Awards are offered in the following categories:

Best Public Sector GIS

The Best Public Sector GIS award is presented to organizations that have demonstrated the use of GIS in improving effectiveness and efficiency in enterprise GIS for public sector operations.

Best Web GIS

The Best Web GIS award is presented to organizations that have demonstrated advanced internet/intranet mapping services that enable publishing and sharing of geographic information through the integration of multiple business systems.

Innovation in GIS

The Innovation in GIS award is presented to individuals or organizations who have newly demonstrated or refined innovation in GIS and geospatial technology through a specific piece of work or project.

Awards will be presented at the annual URISA-OC AGM/Be Spatial Conference and EXPO
