Data: Who Owns IT? Who Pays? Delivery?

Lakeview Golf Course 1190 Dixie Road, Mississauga

The theme for the URISA-OC Fall event is Data: Ownership? Who Pays? Delivery?

Presentations will discuss data from the perspective of ownership of data, open source data, who pays for GIS data, licensing of data and data delivery solutions. Come hear the various challenges your colleagues have experienced with data and participate in the panel discussion after the presentations.

Open Data – The New Reality

 Jury Konga, Principal, eGovFutures Group

There has been a significant increase in the Open Government – Open Data movement both locally and globally.  The current state of Open Data will be presented together with comments on the “Open Data Framework” project for the “G4” (Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa).  The current “era” of Open Data is quickly becoming the new reality and local governments (actually all levels of government) need to develop plans to open their data to the data owners – the citizens.

City of Mississauga

Steve Czajka, Supervisor of Information Planning, City of Mississagua

This presentation will show how the City of Mississauga's Planning and Building Department moved forward with Open Data. The topics will cover a brief description of Mississauga's Open Data initiatives, along with Open Data initiatives that are not yet addressed. An examination of the issues facing the next steps to Open Data, as well as an illustration of where the City of Mississauga's Planning and Building Department would like to be in the future

ODI - Now You Can Download Shapefiles. So What?

Chris North,  Principal, 43 North GIS Consulting Inc.

Many local government organizations today are either participating in, or are considering participating in, some form of Open Data Initiative (ODI). While the spirit of ODI is laudable, most organizations stop short of truly providing their constituents with the full benefits that come from having access the information locked within spatial data.  This presentation will look at the shortcomings – technical, political and societal – of the GIS-centric approach many organizations take towards ODI.  The talk will examine complementary approaches and programs, with particular emphasis on ESRI’s Community Mapping program, that not only provide the non-GIS professional with truly valuable information products, but can actually save a local government organization time and money and help get even greater value from their ODI initiatives.

Government Data at No Cost!

Anne Halverson, Manager Information Access Section, Ministry of Natural Resources

Two licence agreements will be discussed: the Ontario Geospatial Data Exchange and the Unrestricted Use Licence.  Both licence agreements are extremely popular with organizations needing to access Ontario-centric geospatial data at no cost.  Is there a catch?  Find out by attending this presentation.
