Quick Hits for GIS in Public Works

York Region Geomatics Branch has developed some easy-to-implement utilities as part of the Region’s Transportation and Works Department’s GIS program. This presentation will demonstrate 4 of these quick hits, talk about how they were implemented, and the time and data resources required:

1. Line of Sight application for determining visibility from one target to another based on ground elevation (eg. wireless service).

2. Quick maps for databases using ArcIMS map services This tool enables a user to show a location from any spreadsheet or database by adding a field with a hyperlink that takes address, intersection, postal code, or x,y co-ordinates from other fields to display a map showing the location.

3. A property notification application that provides mailing labels for all the addresses in a user defined polygon, for environmental assessments and public meetings.

4. GIS Connect, an easy to use CAD/GIS facility that enables GIS data to be edited and modified in a CAD environment.

Demos will be by Karoleigh Miller and Balaram Basmall, with introduction by Duncan Rowe/Andrew Satterthwaite

Leveraging GIS in Drawing and Document Management: Digital Map Drawer

Presented by:
Mark Adams
Business & Systems Analyst
Cuesta Systems Inc.

“Public Works Departments generate large volumes of design drawings, survey documents, as constructed and environmental reports, as well as numerous other set of documents. Tracking all this documentation and making it readily available to staff when they it is a difficult challenge. Knowing the history of work carried out at a given street intersection for example may require consultation of dozens of documents in different formats and locations; finding and collating this information represents a major undertaking.

The Digital Map Drawer product, first developed in the City of Hamilton’s PRISM project, aims to solve this problem by creating a single digital repository of the various sets of documents available in the organization, and leverages GIS to facilitate map based searching and review of available drawings documents.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of the product in the City of Hamilton context as well as in a fictional generic implementation.”
